Hazell's Story
Before the Student Leadership Programme started, in the autumn semester I did achieve good grades, getting 3 A's and 1 B, but I knew that I was capable of more and wasn't really focused at uni. I knew that the 2nd semester would be a lot tougher, especially since I would need to do exams. Generally I don't perform as well in exams compared to coursework, so I was really worried about the 2nd semester.
When I first found out about the SLP I wasn't too sure about it, but after hearing what other people who joined the programme were saying I decided to give it a go. I was surprised with the initial 3 day intensive training workshop, as I thoroughly enjoyed it, and began to think about the way I act, the things I do and for what reasons.
Meeting my coach and setting my goals was definitely the big turning point, and really set out the commitment I needed to have to become successful at achieving my goals. One of them was "Proud, happy and motivated handing in 1st grade assignments on time". This involved a lot of time management and concentration on my studies. Coach meetings and setting actions really boosted my motivation, and tested my commitment. Throughout the programme I grew in confidence with my studies, and had more faith in myself with sitting exams.
On results day, I was truly proud of myself. My final goal was reached! I achieved all 1st grades! The SLP really brought a change in me for the better. I joined the programme to meet new people, become more involved with the university and to prove to myself that I can achieve anything I set my mind to...and I did!
