Belfast RESPECT
RESPECT (Re-Engaging and Supporting People to Enable Community Transformation) is a major programme of training and community activity aimed at the economic and social regeneration of the Shankill area of Belfast. It is being run by Farset Youth & Community Development Limited, with major funding from the Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities Northern Ireland Fund.
Shankill is one of Belfast’s oldest settlements and was largely at the epicentre of the Troubles for over 30 years. Whilst it now has a range of excellent schools, community and youth facilities and statutory agencies working hard to improve opportunities and well being, there are obstacles to full engagement with these services and the development of community life.
The aim of the RESPECT programme is to reveal and release the potential of individuals, families and key stakeholders in the area to develop a culture of trust and respect, raise aspirations, increase individual responsibility and community ownership and create greater community cohesion
RESPECT is a 3-year programme that constitutes a series of training and coaching activities that combine to create an environment, process, delivery and support structure for enabling change in the lives of ‘at risk’ young people. They will undertake a series of intensive personal development training events, a programme of personal performance coaching and a sustained period of support in implementing change and in accessing and taking full advantage of the education, training and employment services available to them.
Whilst transforming the lives of young people engaged with anti-social behaviour; not in education, employment or training (NEET) and at risk of not achieving their potential is a prime focus of the programme, RESPECT works with a whole range of community stakeholders to engage them in refocusing their communities and empower them to act as agents of community change.
At the core of the project is a series of Youth at Risk’s proven transformational personal development training programmes, designed to bring about fundamental changes to the mindsets of the young people and the behaviour of the community that surrounds them.
