Community Transformation Programme
Living in safer, stronger more cohesive communities is something we would all welcome now and for future generations.
Young people are the future of our communities. That’s why Youth at Risk is joining forces with local authorities across the UK to run major community development programmes, aimed at bringing about lasting change to the lives of disaffected and alienated young people enabling them to become valuable members of society who contribute to, rather than detract from, the community.
Youth at Risk’s community programmes have been transforming the lives of young people since 1992 – turning them away from destructive behaviour, enabling them to take control of their lives and responsibility for their actions, raise their aspirations and realise their potential to build a worthwhile future. This in turn has helped to restore and revitalise the communities in which they live.
The programme will not simply work with the young people, but with professionals from a range of youth services, voluntary organisations, stakeholders, local business, parents, carers, family networks, in fact the whole community.
So far eight local authorities are committed to running a Community Transformation Programme, to find out more about how you get involved you can contact a Community Project Manager for the areas listed below:
| Croydon | Central Bedfordshire |
| Manchester | Salford |
| Sandwell | |
| Southend |
The aims of the programme are:
- To help raise engagement amongst the community
- Impact individuals aspirations and involvement both the volunteers and the young people
- Improve young people’s educational achievement, engagement with training and employment and decrease anti-social behaviour
- Establish community based and led projects to enhance the experience of living in / being part of or serving that community
The programmes will utilise a range of Youth at Risk’s existing schemes to support the community in its transformation, these are:
Coaching for Success Our schools based programme involves working with groups of up to 25 young people. These each last for 6 months and start with intensive training followed by 6 months of performance coaching.
Coaching for Employment This is targeted at young people who are NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training), or at risk of NEET, and supports them with breaking up internal barriers to re-entering education or gaining and maintaining employment. It starts with a 4 day intensive training and also has a 6 month period of follow through support and coaching.
Coaching for Communities In year two of the CTP we will identify, and work with, approximately 25 of the young people in the community who are most in need, alienated from mainstream society or are already a long way down the road of disengagement and anti-social behaviour
As part of the programme, Youth at Risk will deliver at least 10 Youth at Risk training programmes for adults, enabling them to support the schemes, become coaches to the young people involved and support young people to engage and participate in their community.
